Most lawn diseases are caused by fungi. These Fungi are completely naturally occurring in our soil. When conditions are right, usually dark damp and warm condition these fungi can multiply and attack the lawn, using the grass as a food source. Here are some of the most commonly occurring fungal diseases.

Red Thread

This fungus occurs when there are dark damp conditions usually in Spring or late Summer and when the grass plant is stressed. The fungus attaches itself to the plant and absorbs nutrients, browning the leaf which  causes small irregular brown patches over the lawn. The best control method is to feed the lawn and ensure correct mowing techniques are used to reduce stress. As a last resort a fungicide can be used to eradicate it. 

Fusarium

Also commonly called “snow mould” because it is commonly occurs under snowy footprints. This can result in slimy looking dead patches with white fruiting bodies. This disease can be quite devastating and often can completely kill the grass patches which may require seeding. A fungicide treatment as soon as it is seen can limit the damage.

Mushrooms

These are incredibly common on British lawns but are not actually too much to be worried about. Fungal spores attach themselves to organic matter in the soil and sprout to form mushrooms, sometimes incredibly quickly, even overnight. They are a sign that you have fertile soil so you should see them as a compliment!  There is no chemical control for mushrooms so the easiest method is to pick them out by hand, or mow over them with a collection box on the mower to prevent spreading the spores.
